Headaches are reportedly the most frequently seen condition by GPs. Although headaches can be very painful and debilitating, most headaches are non serious and GPs usually recommend painkilling medication. In many cases, however, physiotherapy and / or acupuncture can be of great benefit to headache sufferers. There are many different types of headache:

  • Migraine
  • Tension Type Headache
  • Chronic Daily Headache
  • Cervicogenic headache
  • Cluster Headache
  • Ice Pick / Ice Cream Headache
  • Sinister Headache: Meningitis/Subarachnoid Haemorrhage/Cranial Arteritis
  • Facial Headache: Acute Sinusitis, Post Herpetic Neuralgia, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Temporomandibular Joint

By far the most common types of headaches are tension type headaches and migraines, but very often people present with a mixture of different types of headache. Accurate diagnosis of the type of headache is an important part of their successful management.

Acupuncture has been found to be very helpful in treating migraine and tension type headaches. It has also been shown that a feature of many headaches is muscular tension or restriction in the upper joints of the neck. Manual therapy such as specific massage techniques and joint mobilisation is often very successful in improving neck mobility which in turn can alleviate headaches.

Lynn uses a combination of manual therapy and acupuncture to treat many types of headache presentation. As previously mentioned, however, the first step to success with conquering headaches is an accurate diagnosis which is achieved by careful questioning and examination. Although GPs can screen patients for the more serious types of headache, they simply do not have time to devote to the thorough examination needed to accurately diagnose headache types. The simplest solution is to prescribe painkillers, but this of course does not address the cause or attempt to cure the headache, simply to treat the pain when the headache arises. Unfortunately, headaches can become more frequent or resistant to medication over time, but Lynn has had excellent success with treating many different forms of headache presentation.
