Pilates


Pilates is an effective form of exercise for many people with many needs….. providing it is taught by a knowledgeable and appropriately qualified instructor! Lynn qualified as a  Body Control Pilates instructor in 2001. Body Control Pilates is renowned as a world-leading education provider for Pilates teaching. Very few Body Control instructors work in gyms as their class sizes tend to be much larger than those recommended by Body Control. Pilates is a form of exercise which is specifically aimed at improving the way the body moves, using the muscles in the way they are designed to be used thus creating a more efficient, capable body. This improvement in function is achievable whether you are a high level sports person, recreational athlete, have a desk-bound job or if you have a specific medical condition.

Pilates can help in many ways for a huge variety of conditions including:

  • Strengthen and tone weakened or injured muscles
  • Recovery from injury or surgery
  • Improve back pain and other joint and muscular conditions
  • Improve mobility and balance
  • Improve posture and body shape
  • Strengthen pelvic floor, stomach and other “core ” muscles
  • General wellbeing
  • Optimise sporting performance and prevent injury

The beauty of Pilates is that it is so flexible in its application – Lynn has had truly astounding results with the most inflexible, round-shouldered office worker, people for whom back surgery has been recommended (and subsequently not needed) and with people recovering from stroke and other medical conditions. Of course, Pilates can be challenging and beneficial for those already fit and healthy, and simply want to remain so or improve in some way! Lynn’s extensive physiotherapy experience ensures that clients coming for Pilates tuition are receiving expert guidance and tuition and can be confident that their needs will be addressed. Lynn firmly believes Pilates can help most people if used appropriately and intelligently.

To benefit most from Pilates classes, it is recommended the client attend for a 1:1 appointment / assessment. During this assessment, any specific medical or other individual issues can be identified and discussed confidentially (Lynn is very experienced in interpreting and explaining medical investigations such as scans, blood tests and xrays so please bring any past medical notes to session). A physiotherapy assessment and movement analysis will be performed and the findings discussed and introductory Pilates exercises will be taught.  Missing out this stage can delay progress with Pilates, so it certainly is time well spent!
